FINDING THE RIGHT PROP FOR YOUR PLANE

There is a selection of radio-controlled airplane propellers being sold on the market. Props can be the traditional two, three, four and five-blade configuration. Props are sized by diameter and pitch, a 10-inch diameter prop with four degrees of twist would be a 10 x 4. If you change the diameter and/or the pitch the prop will change thrust produced your engine.

Always refer to the engine manufacturer’s recommendations. Nitro and gas engines have been made to use a certain range of props. By not staying in this range can damage the engine by increasing loads or exceeding the RPM range designed by the manufacturer.

You will need to figure out if your plane needs more speed or thrust.  3-D planes need more thrust and not much speed to work well. These planes do better from a prop with a larger diameter and smaller degree of twist. [Read more…]
